Wolves in Oregon

Shannon Basner / Wolf Song of Alaska Volunteer

Up until the 1930's, the Gray Wolf was thriving in the State of Oregon. According to the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Service, it has been confirmed that wolves do not inhabit Oregon presently and there aren't any plans to reintroduce the wolf to the area.  The expectation is that the wolves that had been introduced to the Idaho area will migrate to Oregon to establish a permanent population.  Biologists believe that the habitat is not conducive to the survival of wolves. Over the past few years there have been sightings of wolves and/or tracks in Eastern Oregon.  In 1999, one radio-collared a wolf was found and brought back to Idaho.  Another radio-collared wolf was struck down by an automobile and died.  The third wolf that entered Oregon in 2000, was found shot in the Blue Mountains.  Any wild wolves that enter the Oregon territory are still protected by the Endangered Species Act, though the wolf's status in Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, and South Dakota has been changed to threatened.
