| After
being wiped out for several decades, the wolf was reintroduced
into the Idaho area in 1995. Reports from the
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have estimated there
to be about 285 wolves in Idaho presently. Since
the reintroduction, the wolves have migrated as far
as Utah and Oregon.
Wolf
organizations have been very involved in protecting
the wolves in Idaho. They have in the past offered
rewards to aid in the apprehending of people who were
responsible for poisoning the wolves in this area.
In April of 2003, Idaho's Federal District Court judge,
Julie B. Winmill, renewed a protection plan for wolves
in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. This
decision will also protect wolves on private lands within the Sawtooth National
Recreation Area.
